I saw The Devil Wears Prada at the suggestion of a friend who used to work in the fashion industry, and who said that's just the way it is there. Boy, am I glad I don't work in the fashion industry! What a world of false standards and bitchiness. I did work for a woman boss from hell in another high-powered industry--Wall Street. Unlike my former boss, the Anna Wintour character never raises her voice because she never needs to.
But oh, what hoops the heroine has to jump through. She has to go do her boss's bidding whenever her cell phone rings, including getting prepublication copies of the next Harry Potter novel for the boss's two daughters, on less than two hours' notice. And she must drop everything and go on that coveted trip to Paris, otherwise the boss will conclude that the heroine is not serious about her present job or any other job.

I want to see this, but will wait and rent it. My friend read the book when it first came out and loved it. I haven't even read it.

Everyone that hasn't seen it yet, read the book first, it's so much better than the movie. All the really cute parts of the book are left out. I liked the movie ok.

"read the book first, it's so much better than the movie"
When the movie is better than the book, I would rather see the movie first - otherwise I do a slow burn about how they ruined the book. Case in point: Planet of the Apes, by Pierre Boulle, and the Charlton Heston movie based on it. I'm glad I saw the movie first. I'd read a review if the book so I knew that the ending was changed in the movie (Rod Serling's idea, over Boulle's objections). Two very memorable episodes in the book were left completely out of the movie.
I'm happy to be rediscovering this thread after my long absence from ProBoards. When I reread my own posts now, I think "did I write that?"
Besides, this thread refreshes my memory about movies.
