I got this recipe off a bag of popcorn kernels years ago.
Sugared Popcorn 1 1/2 cups brown sugar 2 tbsp butter or margarine. 1/3 cup water. 6 - 8 cups popped popcorn Place all ingredients in a saucepan & boil, stirring frequently until mixture reaches soft ball stage (238F). Pour over popped corn & stir to cover.let cook & break into pieces.
Variations Replace brown sugar with white sugar. Add a few drops of food colouring of your choice. Once mixture has reached soft ball stage, add flavouring of your choice (I have tried both mint & raspberry. Both are good.) pour over popped corn & cool. Break into pieces.

I don't think it would make popcorn balls very well because it doesn't stick the pieces together very hard. It is more of coating. It is very tasty though. I always made the brown sugar one but this year, I tried it with white sugar & flavourings & really liked it.

Hazel, I think the popcorn balls back in the day were made with molasses. My mother use to make them when I was little.
